Rats are more than a nuisance. They gnaw through cables and pipes, contaminate food and spread dirt wherever they run. A rat problem tends to grow quickly, so it is worth acting at the first sign. We deal with rats in homes, gardens, outbuildings and commercial premises across Essex, using safe and controlled methods. Calling early keeps the work simpler and the damage smaller.
Our technicians work from our base near Chelmsford. We explain what we find in plain language, set out how we will deal with it, and agree the price with you before any work starts. We also tell you what is drawing them in, so the problem is less likely to come back.

Rat droppings are larger than mouse droppings and are often found near food, bins or along their regular routes. Look for greasy runs along walls and fences, gnaw marks on wood, pipes and cables, and burrows in the garden, often beside sheds, decking, compost heaps or under paving. Rats leave smears where their fur rubs along surfaces they use every day. A freshly gnawed edge looks pale and sharp, while older marks darken. Spotting these early makes the job easier.
Noises are another clue. Scratching in the loft, scuttling under floors or behind walls, and thumping at night all point to rats. They are cautious animals and tend to appear after dark, so many people only notice them once the signs build up. Gnawed cables are a particular worry, because they can cause electrical faults. If you hear movement overhead, check the loft access and any gaps where pipes enter the building. Dogs barking at floors or walls can be a sign too.

Rats come for food, water and shelter. Food waste, open or overflowing bins, spilt seed put out for wildlife, compost, poultry feed and pet food left outside all attract them. Blocked or damaged drains give them a route into buildings. Once they find a reliable meal and a dry place to nest, they breed quickly and a handful can become many. Food left on the ground beneath feeders is a very common cause that people overlook.
This matters for health and for the building. Rats can contaminate food and surfaces and damage insulation, wiring and pipework. In Essex, properties near the estuary and coast, farmland, fields and wooded edges often see rats looking for shelter, while towns and newer estates see them using drains, bins and gaps beside extensions. We keep our comments general because every site is different. Older properties with worn brickwork and gaps are as exposed as newer ones.

We start with an inspection of the house, garden and outbuildings, looking for entry points, burrows and the places rats are feeding. We then use baiting and trapping in a safe, controlled way, with devices placed where pets, children and wildlife cannot reach them. We explain where everything is, and we return to check and remove it when the job is complete. We take care to leave the property tidy and safe. You will know what to expect throughout.
Treatment lasts longer alongside proofing and tidy habits, so we advise on sealing gaps, repairing damaged drains, using lidded bins and removing what attracts rats in the first place. The service suits homeowners, landlords, holiday lets, farms, shops, restaurants and offices. The price is agreed before we start, and we will tell you plainly if more visits are needed. Businesses can ask us to work outside trading hours and to provide a record of visits. We keep you updated after each visit.
We cover towns and villages across Essex. Choose your area to see how rat control works locally.

Rats are secretive and mostly active after dark, so the first clues are usually small marks and sounds rather than a sighting of the animal itself.

Rats come to gardens for food, water and shelter, so the most reliable way to keep them away is to remove all three before they settle in.

Most household pests leave clues behind, and learning to read droppings, damage, noises and timing will help you decide what you are dealing with and what to do next.
Read the guide →Rat droppings are noticeably larger than mouse droppings, and rats leave bigger gnaw marks and greasy runs along walls. Burrows in the garden also point to rats. If you are unsure, we identify the animal during the inspection so the correct treatment is used.
We place bait and traps carefully, in secured positions that children, pets and wildlife cannot get into, and we tell you exactly where they are. If you have dogs, cats or animals in the garden, mention it when you book so we can plan around them.
It depends on how many there are and how easily they can reach food and shelter. Many cases need a few visits so we can check the devices and see whether activity has fallen. We explain what to expect at the start and update you as we go.
Remove food sources such as waste, spilt seed, compost and open bins, and keep outbuildings tidy. Repair damaged drains and seal gaps around pipes and doors. We give specific advice for your property, because the cause is often a simple thing that can be put right.
