That mix matters, because adult carpet beetles fly in through open windows in spring and summer, often after feeding on pollen outdoors, and then lay eggs somewhere dark indoors where nobody will disturb them for weeks at a time, such as behind a wardrobe or beneath a bed.
Older properties tend to have more nooks for them to use: gaps under floorboards, loft spaces with old insulation, wardrobes at the back of unused rooms, and cupboards full of stored fabrics and spare bedding. Newer homes are not immune, as the beetles simply need wool, hair, feathers or a little fibrous dust to get started, and most houses in Billericay have all of those somewhere, whatever their age or style.
