Loughton is full of family homes with gardens, and a house with children usually means crumbs, juice and snacks in more rooms than one. Black ants notice quickly. If you have a trail across the kitchen floor or ants gathering around a bin or a pet bowl, we can find out where they come from and treat the nest.
With Epping Forest so close, there is always a lot of soil, leaf litter and rotting wood nearby for ants to nest in. That does not mean every ant problem starts there, but it does mean colonies are well settled. We will tell you what we find and what we recommend before we begin.

Ants are drawn to anything sweet or greasy: spilled juice, jam on a worktop, cereal in an open box, the last of a pet's dinner. In a busy Loughton house those things appear all day. Scouts that find them leave a scent trail, and within hours dozens of workers follow it to the same spot. That is why the problem seems to arrive suddenly.
Cleaning the trail helps for a little while, but the nest keeps producing workers. We look for the line of ants, follow it to the point where it enters the house, then go outside to find the colony. Common spots in this area are under patios, along drive edges, in raised beds and behind garden walls. Wiping the trail clean without finding that nest only buys a few quiet days.

Before we treat anything in your Loughton home, we ask about children, pets and any allergies in the household. Treatment is then placed where ants will find it and where family members will not touch it, such as in cracks, along wall bases and at the nest entrance. We tell you which areas to leave alone and for how long, in plain words you can pass on to everyone at home.
Ants take time to carry treatment back to the colony, so you may see more activity for a short while before it settles. This is normal and usually a sign that it is working. If trails are still active after a few days, we come back and check, because large nests sometimes need more than one visit. Wet weather can also push workers indoors again, so we note the conditions when we return.
Keep food in sealed containers, wipe surfaces after meals and put pet food away once it has been eaten. Seal the gaps we point out, particularly around back doors and pipes. If you are in Loughton (IG10) and notice winged ants in summer, do not panic; they are part of a normal cycle, though large numbers indoors need checking. We also cover Epping and Harlow.
We cover towns and villages across Essex. Choose your area to see how ant control works locally.

A line of ants across the worktop usually means a scout found food and told the nest, and a few simple habits can break that chain.

Flying ants are the winged males and young queens of an ant colony, and their sudden summer swarms are usually short lived and harmless.

Most household pests leave clues behind, and learning to read droppings, damage, noises and timing will help you decide what you are dealing with and what to do next.
Read the guide →Not necessarily. Garden ants are very common and most nests are outdoors. Trouble starts when a nest sits close to a wall, patio or door and workers find a way in. If ants are in the kitchen as well as the garden, it is worth tracing the trail.
Cleaning removes the scent trail and the food, but the nest keeps sending out workers, and new scouts will find the same gap again. Lasting improvement needs the nest dealt with and the entry point sealed, along with food kept sealed away.
A few ants can be an early sign of a colony that is growing. If you see them only occasionally, careful cleaning may be enough. If they appear daily, or in more than one room, a visit is sensible before the numbers build up.
