Maldon is an estuary town of older buildings, narrow gaps between houses and gardens running down towards the river. Black garden ants like all of it. If you are finding ants on a worktop, in a bathroom or along a skirting board, we can follow them to the nest and treat it, then show you where they got in.
We work with householders, and with the cafes, shops and boat-related businesses around the quay. Whether it is a single trail or a colony that has settled in a wall, we explain what we have found and agree the plan with you before any treatment is carried out.

Many properties in Maldon were built long before modern damp courses and cavity insulation, and they have settled over time. Mortar joints crack, air bricks wear, and old pipe runs leave small openings. Ants need very little room, so a hairline gap by a window frame or under a back door can be a perfectly good route in. Even a gap thinner than a pencil line will do.
Walls with lime mortar or loose rubble fill also hold warmth, which attracts ants to nest inside. You may notice a thin trail of ants running along the outside of a wall, or small piles of fine soil at its base. We trace what is happening carefully, avoid damaging old fabric, and suggest sensible, proportionate ways to close the openings. That keeps the repair small and the wall intact.

The quay and the streets around it have a mix of food businesses, pubs and shops where sweet drinks, crumbs and waste are part of the daily routine. Ants can find these quickly, especially in warm weather, when customers linger and drinks get spilled. We check kitchens, stores and bin areas, then work outwards to find the nest or the point where the trail begins.
Boat sheds, outbuildings and moorings around Maldon bring their own particular questions, because ants can nest in timber, in stored cushions and under decking. We treat the cause, not just the ants on show, and talk through storage and cleaning habits that make it harder for a colony to establish itself. If activity continues, we come back to check what has changed.
Do not spray the trail, as this scatters the ants and makes the nest harder to trace. Instead, wipe up any spills, keep sweet food covered and note where you see the most activity. If you are in Maldon (CM9) and the ants are in a wall, tell us roughly where. We also work in Chelmsford and Witham, and in the villages around them.
We cover towns and villages across Essex. Choose your area to see how ant control works locally.

A line of ants across the worktop usually means a scout found food and told the nest, and a few simple habits can break that chain.

Flying ants are the winged males and young queens of an ant colony, and their sudden summer swarms are usually short lived and harmless.

Most household pests leave clues behind, and learning to read droppings, damage, noises and timing will help you decide what you are dealing with and what to do next.
Read the guide →Ants often follow warm pipes and damp areas, and a bathroom can be on the route between a nest in a wall cavity and food elsewhere. They may also be after moisture in hot weather. Tracing the trail shows where they are really coming from.
No. Treatment is placed in small amounts where ants travel, and we avoid drilling or damaging plaster or masonry unless it is truly needed, and then only after talking it through with you. Old fabric is treated with care, and any sealing is kept sympathetic.
Usually activity falls over several days as the colony takes in the treatment, though a large nest can take longer. You may see more ants at first. If trails are still active after a week or so, tell us and we will look again.
Tell us what you have found and roughly where it is. We will come back to you — or call 01245 327 274 if it is urgent.
