Ants on Canvey Island tend to show up in the same few places: the kitchen worktop, the back door threshold and the patio edge. They are drawn by sweet food and warmth, and a trail that appears one morning is usually the workers of a nest that has been growing quietly outside for weeks.
Canvey is a low-lying island in the Thames estuary, with a seafront, many bungalows, dense housing and creeks and marsh around the edge. If you are in SS8 and have ants indoors or around the garden, we will find where they are coming from, treat the nest and show you the gaps they use.

Bungalows put every room close to ground level, and that matters with ants. Back doors, patio doors and kitchen windows all sit just above the soil or paving where nests live, so the journey from nest to cupboard can be a matter of a few metres. A nest beneath a slab by the back step can send a trail straight through the door frame.
Where housing is dense, as it is across much of Canvey Island, gardens are small and paved areas are common, and neighbouring nests can sit just the other side of a fence. Treating one garden does not always stop ants arriving from the next, so we look at where the trail enters and talk with you about whether neighbours may need to act too.

A tidy-up on the surface will not end an ant problem, so we begin by following the trail to its source. Workers carry food between the nest and your home along a scent line, which is why they all take the same route. We find the entry point, look for the nest nearby and confirm the species before we choose how to treat it.
Treatment is placed along the trail and at the nest so the workers take it back to the colony. After that we seal gaps where we can around your Canvey Island home, such as door thresholds, pipe entries and cracks in render or paving, and we explain what to keep clear. Where creeks and marsh sit close to a property, the surrounding ground is full of wildlife, so we plan treatment with pets and children in mind.
Seafront cafes, kiosks and takeaways on Canvey Island see plenty of sugar, ice cream and fizzy drinks, which makes a ready supply for ants on warm days. Wipe down counters, keep syrups and sugar sealed and make sure bins are closed. At home the same rules apply to cake tins and pet bowls. We also cover Leigh-on-Sea and Southend-on-Sea, and can arrange a visit if a trail keeps coming back.
We cover towns and villages across Essex. Choose your area to see how ant control works locally.

A line of ants across the worktop usually means a scout found food and told the nest, and a few simple habits can break that chain.

Flying ants are the winged males and young queens of an ant colony, and their sudden summer swarms are usually short lived and harmless.

Most household pests leave clues behind, and learning to read droppings, damage, noises and timing will help you decide what you are dealing with and what to do next.
Read the guide →Bungalow door frames sit close to the ground, and small gaps between frame, threshold and brickwork give ants a direct route in from a nest outside. We follow the trail to confirm where it starts, treat the nest and seal the gap around the frame where it is practical.
Not always. If a nest sits in a neighbouring garden, workers can still cross the boundary. We deal with the nest on your side and block the entry points. If the source is next door, we explain what we found so you can raise it with them.
Ants are mainly a nuisance, but they walk across bins, drains and outdoor surfaces before reaching food, so they can spread germs to worktops and open food. Cover food, wipe surfaces and have us treat the nest if trails keep returning.
